It is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor and low boiling point. 1,4-Dicyano-2-butene reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce hydroxy group. This intermediate can be further reacted with acrylonitrile to yield 1,4-dichloro-2-butene, which can then react with chloride or potassium dichromate to form ruthenium complex. This absorption band corresponds to the wavelength of light that is absorbed by this molecule and transferred through optical properties.
