Sodium aluminum oxide (NaAlO2) is a mesoporous material that has a high surface area and large pore volume. It is also light-emitting, fluorescent, and birefringent. NaAlO2 has been shown to be catalytic in the synthesis of various organic molecules, including phenols and amino acids. The synthesis methods for NaAlO2 are based on the sol-gel process using sodium carbonate as the source of alkali metal ions. Sodium aluminum oxide can be prepared by heating an aluminium foil with sodium carbonate at temperatures below 1000°C. This type of product typically has a bulk density of 1 g/cm3 and a particle size in the range of 10-50 μm.
