(-)-Grindelic acid is a natural product that has been shown to have antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. (-)-Grindelic acid is also active against bacteria that produce acetate, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. It is also effective against hyperproliferative cells, including cancer cells. (-)-Grindelic acid is biosynthesized from the cinnamic acid derivatives of the plants Grindelia robusta and Grindelia hirsuta. This compound has been shown to inhibit the growth of human macrophages in culture by preventing the production of inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species (ROS). (-)-Grindelic acid may be a potential therapeutic for cancer and heart disease due to its ability to inhibit ROS production in vitro.
