6,11-Dihydrodibenzo[b,e]thiepin-11-one is a potent inhibitor of bacterial growth. It was originally isolated from the culture broth of Staphylococcus aureus. This compound belongs to the group of sulfoxides and inhibits bacterial growth by binding to sulfhydryl groups on cysteine residues in enzymes such as dioxygenases, peroxidases, and thioltransferases. 6,11-Dihydrodibenzo[b,e]thiepin-11-one has been shown to inhibit the growth of various bacteria including gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. The inhibition is due to its ability to form hydrogen bonds with amino acid side chains that are involved in protein synthesis. These compounds also have an antibacterial effect against organisms that grow at high concentrations of peroxide.
