Bromoxynil is a herbicide that inhibits the growth of plants by inhibiting photosynthetic activity. The herbicide is absorbed through the leaves and roots, and then transported to the plant's meristems (the point where new cells are formed). Bromoxynil-octanoate is an ester of bromoxynil and octanoic acid. This chemical has shown to be toxic to bacteria in tissue culture, with a matrix effect on toxicity. Bromoxynil-octanoate has been used as an analytical method for p-hydroxybenzoic acid, which can be found in fatty acids. Acute toxicities have been found to be high in rats, mice, rabbits and guinea pigs after oral administration.
