- Methyl 2-Hydroxydodecanoate
Methyl 2-hydroxydodecanoate is a fatty acid that is hydrolyzed by alkaline hydrolysis. It has been shown to be a bidentate ligand for copper, with the general formula of Cu(CH(COOH))2. Methyl 2-hydroxydodecanoate was synthesized and characterized in the 1980s as a result of copper complexation research and has been used in biochemical studies. The synthesis involved the reaction of methyl oleate with a mixture of sodium hydroxide, water, and formaldehyde. The major product was methyl 2-hydroxydodecanoate, which was also produced in high yield when methanol was used instead of oleic acid. Methanol could be used as a solvent because it does not react with copper under these conditions.
