1-Benzo[b]thiophen-2-yl-ethanol is an alcohol that can be synthesized by acetylation of benzo[b]thiophene in the presence of a lipase. It has been shown to be a substrate for lipases and is used in chemoenzymatic synthesis. The enzyme catalyzes the hydrolysis of acetaldehyde to acetic acid with the formation of 1-benzo[b]thiophen-2-yl-ethanol. This reaction proceeds through two steps, first with the addition of water to form acetaldehyde hydrate followed by a second step with the addition of an alcohol. Selectivities are determined by kinetic analysis, which shows that 1-benzo[b]thiophen-2-yl-ethanol is more favorable than other products, such as ethylene glycol or diethylether.
