5-Hydroxy-3-nitrobenzo[b]furan is a benzofuran derivative that inhibits the replication of viruses. It binds to the active site of the enzyme and prevents the nucleophilic attack of the hydroxyl group on the carbonyl carbon. This results in an enamine intermediate, which undergoes a condensation reaction with another molecule of 5-hydroxy-3-nitrobenzo[b]furan, forming a benzofuran derivative. This compound can be used as an antiviral agent as it inhibits nucleic acid synthesis by preventing DNA strand separation.
