CL-316243 is a 2-adrenergic receptor antagonist that is used to treat bowel diseases. CL-316243 binds to the 2-adrenergic receptors in the adipose tissue, which inhibits lipolysis and energy metabolism in adipose cells. This drug also inhibits the cyclase activity of adenosine 3’,5’-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) and cGMP, which are important mediators of energy metabolism. CL-316243 has been shown to be effective in vitro against human adipocytes and may have potential as a pharmacological treatment for obesity and congestive heart failure.
