Tert-butyl N-[(3S,5S)-5-methylpiperidin-3-yl]carbamate is a colorless gas that is soluble in water and alcohol. It has a low viscosity and boiling point. Tert-butyl N-[(3S,5S)-5-methylpiperidin-3-yl]carbamate reacts with oxygen to form hypophosphorous acid, which is an insulator for electrical wires. This compound also reacts with magnesium to produce phosphine as a byproduct. The packaging of tert-butyl N-[(3S,5S)-5-methylpiperidin-3-yl]carbamate must be made from materials that are not reactive with it. Tert-butyl N-[(3S,5S)-5-methylpiperidin-3-yl]carbamate should be stored in a dry place and away from any heat sources or flames
