(S)-1,4-Benzodioxan-2-carboxypiperazine is an organic compound that belongs to the group of piperazine derivatives. It is a mesylate salt of the amide (S)-1,4-benzodioxane-2-carboxylic acid. This compound is used as a chiral auxiliary in organic synthesis and in optical resolution of racemic mixtures. The mesylate salt has been shown to be an efficient reagent for the hydrolysis of esters. The enzyme esterase cleaves ester bonds by attacking the carbonyl carbon next to the ester linkage. The reaction solution can be purified by extraction with water, which is then evaporated to leave a residue that can be crystallized from an organic solvent such as acetone or ethanol.
