It is synthesized by reacting dihydroisoquinoline with hexane in the presence of malonate and an asymmetric synthesis. The product is purified by crystallization with methanol and analyzed using analytical methods such as gas chromatography or mass spectrometry. (3R,11bR)-Tetrabenazine-d3 has been shown to be effective for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and hyperkinetic movement disorders. It is also used to treat neuroleptic malignant syndrome and other conditions caused by dopamine-producing cells in the brain.
