Isoamyl isobutyrate is a volatile organic compound that can inhibit the activity of enzymes, such as acetylcholinesterase. It has also been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the growth of bacteria. Isoamyl isobutyrate has been shown to be an optimal substrate for fatty acid synthesis in yeast. Isoamyl isobutyrate is a product of propionate metabolism in mammals, and it is thought to have a role in maintaining homeostasis and normal cellular function. This chemical compound can be used as a fluorescent probe for detecting hydrogen ions or other acidic molecules at the surface of cells.
Isoamyl isobutyrate has been shown to have physiological activities and biological effects on genetic expression as well as enzyme catalysis in vitro. The structure of this molecule consists of a long hydrocarbon chain with two carbon-carbon double bonds, which gives it its acidic properties.
