PCBs are chlorinated organic compounds that are resistant to environmental degradation. They were used as coolants and lubricants in transformers and capacitors until their use was banned in the 1970s due to their toxicity and persistence. PCB No. 1 is a biphenyl molecule with 9 chlorine substituents. It has been shown to be activated by the cytochrome P450 enzymes, leading to its dechlorination, which can lead to acute toxicities. PCB No. 1 is metabolized by plants through metabolism of methyl ethyl groups and hydroxylation of the phenyl ring. Its toxic effects on rat liver microsomes have also been studied using a polymerase chain reaction technique with optimal concentrations at 0.075 μM for transcription activators and 2 μM for polymerase chain reactions.
