2-(Pentyloxy)benzoic acid is a liquid crystal composed of the molecules 2-pentanol and benzoic acid. It belongs to the class of organic compounds known as amides, which are molecules containing an amine group attached to a carboxylic acid. 2-(Pentyloxy)benzoic acid has been shown to inhibit tyrosine phosphatases, which are enzymes that regulate the production of acetylcholine by breaking down its precursor molecule, choline. This product may be used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS). It is also a chiral compound with two possible configurations, d and l. The d configuration has been shown to bind more strongly to cannabinoid receptors than the l configuration.
