4-tert-Butyl-2,6-bis(hydroxymethyl)phenol is an organic compound that is used as a preservative in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. It is also used to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi in food, textiles, and packaging materials. 4-tert-Butyl-2,6-bis(hydroxymethyl)phenol has been shown to have a low allergenicity potential in animals. This compound is used as a biocide for the sterilization of medical devices such as gloves and masks. 4-tert-Butyl-2,6-bis(hydroxymethyl)phenol has also been shown to be effective against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
