2-Methylbenzene-1,3-dicarbonitrile is an organic compound that is used as a potent inhibitor. It has been shown to be effective in the treatment of cancer due to its ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells by reducing the production of DNA and RNA. 2-Methylbenzene-1,3-dicarbonitrile is synthesized from dimethylformamide (DMF) and reacts with methyl acrylate, yielding a cyclic amide. The amide group reacts intramolecularly with itself or with other molecules to form adducts that are reactive and may result in damage to DNA. This reactive compound can react with endogenous nucleophiles such as thiol groups on proteins or carbohydrates and produce free radicals. These free radicals can lead to cellular damage by damaging DNA.
