1-Benzoyl-pyrrolidin-2-one is a molecule with a piperidine ring that has undergone ring opening. This reaction occurs when the benzoyl group is cleaved from the ring. It can be used in the synthesis of amines, lactams, and primary amines. The kinetic data for this compound are very high because of its activated carboxylic acid group. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) was used to determine the molecular weight and mass fragmentation pattern of 1-benzoyl-pyrrolidin-2-one. Calcium oxide was added to activate the carbonyl group in 1-benzoyl-pyrrolidin-2-one before MALDI analysis.
