N-(2-Methyl-5-nitrophenyl)acetamide is a bioreductive drug that can be used in the treatment of cancer. It is converted to the active form, N-(2-methyl-5-nitrophenyl)acetaldehyde, by enzymes present in the microflora of the colon. The acetaldehyde is then reduced to N-(2-methyl-5-nitrophenyl)acetate and excreted in bile samples or as reactive intermediates that produce cytotoxic metabolites. The metabolic products are conjugated with glutathione and excreted in urine. This drug also has been shown to have an ether extract activity, which may be due to its ability to react with pyridinium ions and inhibit microbial transformation.
