Dimethyl (methylsulfanyl)(sulfanylidene)phosphonite is a toxicant for animals and can cause lung toxicity. The toxicity of dimethyl (methylsulfanyl)(sulfanylidene)phosphonite depends on its impurities, such as 7-ethoxycoumarin. The metabolism of dimethyl (methylsulfanyl)(sulfanylidene)phosphonite in humans has been studied using liver microsomes from different species and tissues. One study found that cytochrome P-450 isoenzymes CYP2B1 and CYP2C11 were involved in the detoxification of this compound.
