4,4,13,13-Tetraethoxy-3,14-dioxa-4,13-disilahexadecane is a synthetic vitamin B1 analogue that has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of the uptake of xylene. It has also been found to be stable in aqueous environments and to have micropore morphology and mesoporous properties. 4,4,13,13-Tetraethoxy-3,14-dioxa-4,13-disilahexadecane is synthesized by reacting 3-(2′hydroxyethyl)pyridine with 1-(2′hydroxyethyl)-1′(trimethylsilyl)ethane in tetrahydrofuran. This compound can be used in coatings as well as solvents due to the hydrophobic nature of its tertiary alcohol groups.
