It has been synthesized by reacting 2-bromo-4,6-dimethoxyphenol with methanol in the presence of hydrochloric acid. This compound has been shown to inhibit proliferation of cancer cells and induce apoptosis in vitro. It also inhibits growth factor signaling pathways, which may be due to its ability to block protein kinase C. 2-(Carboxymethyl)-5-methoxybenzoic acid has been shown to have anticancer activity in vivo and can be used as a potential therapy for cancer patients.
