(E)-3-(3,5-Dihydroxyphenyl)acrylic acid (DHPA) is a naturally occurring molecule that is found in human urine. It has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis and cell proliferation in the urinary tract. DHPA has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting neutrophil activation. The mechanism of this effect is not fully understood, but it may be due to the presence of methoxy groups on the molecule. There are two isomers of DHPA: trans and cis. Trans-DHPA has been shown to have more potent anti-inflammatory effects than cis-DHPA.
