4-Methylbenzothiazole is a bifunctional molecule that can be used as a pesticide and an electrochemical catalyst. It has been shown to work synergistically with other molecules, such as hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide solution. 4-Methylbenzothiazole reacts with nitro groups to form the corresponding diazonium salt, which undergoes further reactions with organic compounds in the presence of sodium hydroxide. The resulting reaction products have been shown to have potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy properties that are useful for chemical sensors and electrochemical cells.
