Potassium 2-ethylhexanoate hydrate is an organic solvent that is primarily used as a reaction intermediate. It can be used to synthesize benzylpenicillin, which is used as an additive to drugs and other pharmaceuticals. Potassium 2-ethylhexanoate hydrate has been shown to react with potassium clavulanate in the presence of carbon dioxide to form potassium 2-ethylhexanoate, which can be hydrolyzed by base to form benzoic acid. The reaction between potassium 2-ethylhexanoate and potassium clavulanate can also be catalyzed by surface methodology, such as ion exchange resin or activated charcoal.
