1-Allyl-3-methylbenzene is a benzene molecule with an allyl group. The allyl group is postulated to be capable of migrating from the 1-position to the 3-position, which is called a "retro" Diels-Alder reaction. This is different from most other reactions in organic chemistry that involve elimination or substitution. The allyl group interacts with the ethane molecule and changes its conformation, causing it to interact differently with the laser beam. At low temperatures, 1-allyl-3-methylbenzene migrates less than 1% of its molecules at -30 degrees Celsius. This means that this substance has a high melting point and will not evaporate easily at lower temperatures.
