5-Hydroxymatrine is a quinolizidine alkaloid that is extracted from the genus Smilax. The extraction process has been optimized to yield high quality 5-hydroxymatrine in a cost effective manner. The acetate extract of 5-hydroxymatrine is then converted to sodium citrate for pharmaceutical use. 5-Hydroxymatrine has been shown to have anticancer properties, as it inhibits the growth of tumor cells and induces apoptosis of cancer cells. It also has anti-inflammatory effects and may be useful in treating skin disorders such as psoriasis.
