It is synthesized by reacting methyl sulfide with benzene in the presence of acid. The industrial synthesis of this compound requires high temperatures and pressures, which are provided by autoclaves. 3-Methylsulfanylbenzenol is soluble in water and reacts with acids to form esters or anhydrides.
