1-Demethylcolchicine is a research tool for the study of ligand-receptor interactions and cell biology. It has also been used to study ion channels in the central nervous system, as well as antibody production. 1-Demethylcolchicine is a potent inhibitor of protein synthesis and is used to study peptides and proteins. 1-Demethylcolchicine binds to the receptor site on cells, which inhibits the activity of the ion channels that are responsible for generating an action potential. This inhibition leads to decreased nerve impulses in neurons, which may contribute to its sedative effects.
