Polymyxin B is a polypeptide antibiotic that is produced by certain strains of Bacillus. It is a mixture of antibiotics, the most important being polymyxin B. Polymyxin B is active against Gram-negative bacteria and has been used to treat infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. In addition to its antimicrobial activity, polymyxin B has shown some activity in autoimmune diseases. It has been shown that this drug may be synthesized through an asymmetric synthesis process. The FT-IR spectroscopy showed that it binds to C. glabrata with a binding constant of 10^5 M^-1
