4-(4-Bromophenyl)but-3-en-2-one is a phenolic compound that has antimutagenic activities. It is an operational antimutagen in the sense that it reacts with DNA to form a covalent adduct. This adduct blocks DNA replication and transcription, thereby preventing mutations from occurring. 4-(4-Bromophenyl)but-3-en-2-one also has hydrophobicities that allow it to penetrate cell membranes, which may be the reason for its antimutagenicity. 4-(4-Bromophenyl)but-3-en-2-one has been shown to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium in vitro, and can be used as a growth inhibitor in food preservation.
