Pentamethyliodobenzene (PMIB) is a reactive intermediate that can be used to synthesize aryl halides. It has been shown to react with peracids, such as hydrochloric acid and peracetic acid, at low temperatures and high concentrations of PMIB. This reaction produces chlorinated biphenyls, which are used in the production of polyurethane plastics. The mechanistic pathway for this reaction is unknown, but it is postulated that the activation energy for this reaction may be higher than other reactions of PMIB due to steric hindrance by the methyl groups on the PMIB molecule.
