1,4-Dihydro-2,3-benzodithiine is a medicinal drug that is used to treat respiratory infections. It has been shown to be effective against viruses and other microorganisms. 1,4-Dihydro-2,3-benzodithiine inhibits the growth of these microorganisms by binding to their carboxy groups and destroying them through oxidation. This process produces reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as nitric oxide (NO) and superoxide anion (O2), which are detectable by electron spin resonance spectroscopy. 1,4-Dihydro-2,3-benzodithiine also has antiviral properties due to its inhibition of viral DNA synthesis and protein synthesis in cells infected with viruses such as influenza A virus.
