4-Methoxybenzene-1,2-diol (4MB) is a reactive outlier that has been shown to be neuroprotective in vitro. It has also been observed to induce apoptosis in cancer cells and PC12 cells. 4MB inhibits the mitochondrial membrane potential in cerebellar granule neurons and human macrophages, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). In rat models, 4MB has been shown to produce stable complexes with DNA and proteins. This compound is a potent inhibitor of chemical reactions such as oxidation and hydroxylation. It also modulates cell signaling pathways, inhibiting the phosphorylation of cAMP response element binding protein (CREB) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2).
