(R)-(’)-Hexahydromandelic acid is an inhibitor of the NS3 protease that cleaves the polyprotein into the mature proteins of hepatitis C virus (HCV). (R)-(’)-Hexahydromandelic acid was synthesized by solvating racemic methylmandelate with formaldehyde and hydrochloric acid. The molecular formula of (R)-(’)-hexahydromandelic acid is C6H8O6, and its molecular weight is 226.16. This compound has been shown to have antiviral properties against HCV in vitro, but more research is needed to determine whether it can be used as a treatment for hepatitis.
