2-Chloroethyl cyclohexyl sulphide (2CES) is a coordination compound with a volatile, chlorinated benzene core. It is synthesized by the reaction of 2-chloroethylcyclohexane with elemental sulfur and then purified by recrystallization from acetonitrile. The molecule has two isomers that are distinguished by their different luminescent properties:
(1) 2,4-dichlorocyclohexylsulfane
(2) 2,6-dichlorocyclohexylsulfane
The synthesis of 2CES requires chlorination of the aromatic ring and sulfonation at the alpha carbon to form a carbanion which reacts with sulfur to form the desired product. The molecular structure consists of an inorganic ligand coordinated to an organic ligand. X-ray diffraction data show that the molecule adopts a supramolecular arrangement with the organic ligands
