Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that inhibits the biosynthesis of prostaglandins. It is used to treat pain, inflammation and fever. Ibuprofen has been shown to be effective in vivo in a number of animal models for microbial infection. This drug has also been found to reduce the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as PGE2 levels and bv2 microglial activation in an inflammatory bowel disease model. Ibuprofen also reduces the severity of acute toxicities associated with fatty acid hydroxylation by inhibiting the activity of cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) enzymes.
