The drug binds to the enzyme deacetylase, which is essential for the biosynthesis of lipopolysaccharide. The drug also has hydroxamic acid groups and a carboxy group, which are responsible for its antibiotic activity. N-[(1S,2R)-2-Hydroxy-1-[(hydroxyamino)carbonyl]propyl]-4-[[4-(4-morpholinylmethyl)phenyl]ethynyl]benzamide has been shown to be effective against strains of bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
