2-Propyl-4-(4-pyridylazo)phenol is a hydrophobic, low-molecular weight compound that has been shown to be useful as a fluorescent dye. This compound absorbs light in the visible region and emits light in the near infrared region. 2PAP has been used as a reporter molecule for protein localization and as a probe for DNA replication. The diffraction pattern of 2PAP crystals was found to be similar to that of benzene crystals, indicating that 2PAP belongs to the class of aromatic compounds. Optical microscopy and x-ray diffraction studies have revealed that 2PAP can form nanofibers with low molecular weights, which are advantageous for use in optical devices such as optical microscopes or solar cells.
