Propargyl-dPEG®1-NHS Ester is a bioconjugate that is made up of a poly(propargyl)glycidyl ether and an NHS ester. It has been shown to induce apoptosis in cells, which is a form of programmed cell death. The uptake of this compound by cells has been shown to be particle dependent. This bioconjugate has been used to treat viruses and autoimmune diseases. The epidermal growth factor (EGF) binding site on the epidermal growth receptor has been targeted using this bioconjugate, leading to activation of the receptor and increased cellular proliferation. The morphology of cells treated with this bioconjugate was altered, showing an increase in the number of long projections called filopodia and an increase in the number of lamellipodia.
