Erythromycin is an antibiotic that belongs to the macrolide class of antibiotics. It is usually used for the treatment of a number of bacterial infections, including pneumonia and other respiratory tract infections, skin infections, and sexually transmitted diseases. Erythromycin has been shown to be effective against bacteria that are resistant to penicillin and erythromycin. Erythromycin inhibits protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes during the process of translation. This binding prevents formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division.
Erythromycin is used in analytical chemistry as a reagent in sample preparation procedures, such as extraction or purification of compounds from samples. It has also been shown to have chemical stability in wastewater treatment systems when exposed to chronic levels of organic matter and light exposure.
