It can be obtained by alkaline hydrolysis of 4-(methoxycarbonyl)thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid, or by the action of methanol on thiophene. The solubility of this compound in solvents depends on the polarity and the hydrogen bonding capability of the solvent. The kinetics of hydrolysis are dependent on temperature and pH.
