It is also present in the environment as a result of its production and use as an intermediate for epoxy resins. 5-Ethyl-1,3-benzenediol can be produced from isobutyl alcohol, which is a byproduct of petroleum refining. 5-Ethyl-1,3-benzenediol has been found to cause cancer in laboratory animals and may pose a risk to human health. The carcinogenic activity of this chemical is thought to be due to its interaction with DNA and proteins, leading to mutations and cell death.
