1-(2-Methylphenoxy)-2-propanol is a beta-adrenergic agonist that acts by stimulating the beta-1, beta-2 and beta-3 receptors. It has been shown to increase heart rate and blood pressure in patients with coronary artery disease. This drug also has been used to treat anginal attacks, although it appears to be less effective than nitroglycerin. 1-(2-Methylphenoxy)-2-propanol may be used as an alternative to nitroglycerin for people who are allergic or intolerant of nitrates. This medication has not been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for this use. 1-(2-Methylphenoxy)-2-propanol can also be used to relieve symptoms of pectoral muscle pain caused by chest wall injury or costochondritis. The drug can cause side effects such as dizziness, headache, nausea, and vomiting.
