Podophyllotoxin is a natural product that is used in the industrial preparation of other chemicals, such as fluorescence probes and immunosuppressants. Podophyllotoxin has also been shown to have anticancer properties. It inhibits the growth of cancer cells by binding to fatty acids, which are important for cell growth. Podophyllotoxin also inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis through inhibition of nitrogen-containing enzymes. The asymmetric synthesis of podophyllotoxin was achieved using an enantioselective reaction between an alkanoic acid and a hydroxyl group.
