Donepezil is a cholinesterase inhibitor that is used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Donepezil hydrochloride is the hydrochloric acid salt of donepezil and is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. It prevents the breakdown of acetylcholine, which leads to increased activity at muscarinic receptors and nicotinic receptors. Donepezil has been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of dementia and improving cognitive function in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors are used as industrial process intermediates, such as for the production of insecticides, pesticides, or other organic compounds.
