1-Adamantyl isocyanate is a molecule that belongs to the class of alcohols. It has been shown to react with zirconium oxide, a polymer material, in the presence of water to form an amine bond. The mechanism for this reaction is similar to that of the reaction between chloramine and amines. 1-Adamantyl isocyanate has been observed to induce insulin resistance in mice and rats by binding to the CCR5 receptor. This effect may be due to its ability to inhibit fatty acid synthesis, which leads to reduced levels of prostaglandins.
1-Adamantyl isocyanate has also been shown in vitro as a potent inhibitor of HIV-1 replication and cell culture studies indicate it inhibits HIV-1 infectivity and prevents cell fusion.
