3-Acetyl-2,5-dichlorothiophene is an antimicrobial agent that has been found to have activity against cancer cells. 3-Acetyl-2,5-dichlorothiophene inhibits the growth of cancer cells by binding to the aldehyde group on proteins and modifying their structure. It also binds to chloride ions and inhibits anhydrase enzymes that are involved in metabolism of sugars and amino acids, leading to increased cell death. 3-Acetyl-2,5-dichlorothiophene has shown toxicity in animals studies at high doses. The LD50 for rats is 1200 mg/kg body weight after oral administration. 3-Acetyl-2,5-dichlorothiophene has been shown to inhibit the growth of chalcone synthase (CHS), an enzyme involved in plant pigments such as anthocyanin or flavonoids production.
