5-Acetyluracil is a nucleoside that is used as an antibacterial agent. It is a pyrimidine nucleoside with the chemical formula C5H4N4O3. 5-Acetyluracil has been shown to have bactericidal activity against Streptococcus faecalis in vivo and in vitro. This compound is active against Gram-positive bacteria, but not Gram-negative bacteria, which may be due to its high affinity for bacterial DNA. 5-Acetyluracil is activated by dehydrogenase enzymes, which convert it into uracil, an irreversible inhibitor of cell division, and inhibits bacterial growth by attacking the purine ring of DNA.
