5-Amino-2-cyanopyridine is a triazine compound that has been shown to have high potency against fatty acids. It is also able to inhibit the growth of bacteria, fungi and viruses. 5-Amino-2-cyanopyridine binds to copper ions and inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria by interfering with the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase. The hydroxy group on the 5-amino group is important for binding to copper ions, while the chloride ion that is attached to the pyridine ring stabilizes this interaction. In addition, 5-amino-2-cyanopyridine reduces the activity of deoxyribonuclease enzymes that cause DNA fragmentation in bacteria. This process may be due to its ability to react with aldehyde groups on proteins in bacterial cells.
